Hair Trigger Just Keeps Piling on the Awards
October 1, 2013
The Department of Creative Writing’s fiction journal, Hair Trigger 35, has won 11 Gold Circle awards for its stories and essays as reviewed by the 2013 Columbia University Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). Ever since Hair Trigger began submitting entries to CSPA in 1990, it has won awards every single year—garnering a total of 184—including this year’s winners.
Hair Trigger arguably maintains a standard of excellence unrivaled by similar journals from the nation’s best creative writing programs. Featuring the best of the best from student writing generated in Story Workshop® and other classes in the Creative Writing program, it is edited by top students in the program with guidance from a faculty advisor.
“The fact that CSPA judges (and editors nationwide) consistently acknowledge our students' work is a testament to the talent of our students and the commitment of each teacher—from Fiction I to Advanced Fiction—in guiding his or her students toward developing their craft,” said faculty advisor Christine Maul Rice.
Twenty-five issues entered so far in national competitions have resulted in 26 major awards, including:
- Nine Gold Crowns from the Columbia University Scholastic Press Association (CSPA)
- Two first-place prizes from the Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines (Now Council of Literary Magazines and Presses—CLMP)
- Two Director's Prizes from the Associate Writing Programs (AWP)
According to CSPA, this year attracted 12,847 entries, with a total of 1,780 winners in either First, Second or Third Place or for Certificates of Merit. Below is this year’s list of winners in Hair Trigger 35
