SiLA Features Talented Guest Lecturers

September 6, 2013

This past month, Semester in LA welcomed prolific producer Richard Gladstein (Reservoir Dogs, Finding Neverland), writer/director Jeff Wadlow (Bates Motel, Kick-Ass 2), and series creators Matt Weiner (Mad Men) and Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad) to Columbia’s Raleigh Studios campus as guest lecturers. The speakers marked the close of an exciting semester for SiLA students in the Directing, Costume Design, Producing, Graduate Music Composition, and Transmedia & Cross-Platform Development programs this summer.

Jeff Wadlow and Richard Gladstein met with students to give insight into producing their own original content for film. Wadlow, an accomplished writer and director, advised the young directors on developing their own work and producing within the industry.

Matt Weiner and Vince Gilligan visited the Transmedia and Producing students to discuss their hit series and talk about the television industry. Weiner stressed the importance of interning and forging connections in all areas of the industry (he got his start as a PA). Gilligan spoke on the opportunities granted by script competitions (his entrance into the industry).

In addition to the guest lecturers this semester, students visited studios, production companies, and conventions. Included among the visits were top studios Paramount, Sony, XBOX and Fox; production companies Electric Entertainment, Beacon Pictures, and Mirada; and trips to San Diego’s Comic-Con and a guided tour of multi-platform studio Machinima.
