Voices of Strength Featured in the Chicago Tribune
Voices of Strength, a work by five contemporary African choreographers, is at the Columbia College Chicago Dance Center September 13-15, 2012.
The production features several programs. The first program, playing Sept. 13 and 14, 2012 features South Africa's Nelisiwe Xaba and Mali-based Kettly Noel in a collaboration, along with a piece from the Ivory Coast's Nadia Beugre. The second program, set for two performances on Sept. 15, 2012, features Morocco's Bouchra Ouizguen with three other performers and Mozambique's Maria Helena Pinto's solo piece.
"This is by no means what we think of as traditional African dance," Phil Reynolds, executive director of the Dance Center, explains. "The work may be infused by those traditions, but these choreographers are young, trying to make works that are very contemporary, part of a new generation of choreographers from the African continent."
The show is featured in the Chicago Tribune.
