Dan Dinello appointed 2010 Distinguished Faculty Scholar

The Provost's office has announced Dan Dinello, full-time faculty member in the Film & Video department, is a newly appointed 2010 Distinguished Faculty Scholar. 

Bruce Sheridan, Chair of the Film & Video department makes this point: “While it is not uncommon for long-serving faculty to be high achievers in these ways, it is extremely rare for an individual to attain Mr. Dinello’s range and depth.” 

Dan’s work as a writer, filmmaker and teacher are distinctive for both their quality and breadth. His book Technophobia! Science Fiction Visions of Posthuman Technology (University of Texas Press, 2006) is among the most widely reviewed and praised books of its kind, receiving notice in publications of broad interest, including the Chicago Tribune, the Manchester Guardian, Technology and Culture, Material Culture and many others. 

Dan also authored a chapter in the book Battlestar Galactica and Philosophy (Open Court, 2008) and continues to serve as a leading and insightful analyst on the “dialectic” between science and popular culture, publishing articles such as “Zombified”—in the Chicago Sun Times.  He currently has two other books in development.

Distinguished Faculty Fellows

In 2006, the Provost’s Office launched a program to recognize the artistic, scholarly, and pedagogical accomplishments of Columbia faculty members by awarding Distinguished Faculty Fellowships in each of these areas.  The members of the first cohort of Fellows are nearing the end of their two-year terms, during which they have each endeavored to make their scholarly inquiry or creative processes visible across departments and disciplines.  As part of their continued efforts, each Fellow will be preparing a presentation, lecture, performance, exhibition, or other event for the campus community.
