Radio Major Rachel Kasperek Chosen to DJ for Young Chicago Authors Events
Following a successful stint as a DJ during Manifest, Columbia College
Chicago's Annual Urban Arts Festival, Radio Department Senior Rachel
Kasperek aka "DJ RachCity," has been selected as the resident DJ every
Tuesday for #WordPlay, Chicago's longest running youth workshop and open
mic, sponsored by Young Chicago Authors
Taking place every Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at 1180 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago, #WordPlay is a free program open to all performers of all ages. Participants are able to perform pieces in progress, or finished work in front of a supportive audience. With a workshop from 6-7 p.m., followed by open mic at 7:00 p.m., the event averages over 80 audience members per week.
Rachel, or "DJ RachCity," had this to say about the gig. "Working with Young Chicago Authors is such a neat experience. When a performer finishes a poem, I try and play a song that relates to the theme of the poem. As a DJ I am responsible for finding the music that can match the performance. When this happens, it sends a shockwave through the crowd and it's a really cool feeling. With words and music, we collaborate and create powerful art."
