Cutting Through The Field

Up & Coming Editors Dana Huiras (BA '08), Jimmy Helm (BA '10), and Patrick Duffy (BA '02) were recently featured in Screen, a production publication covering many facets of the film industry.

Dana Huiras, Optimus
Huiras started as an intern at Optimus after graduation, and has just recently worked her way up to Sr. Assistant Editor at the end of last year.

While there, Huiras has edited projects for companies including BMO Harris, Kelloggs, USG, Huggies, KFC, Always, Tresemme, and more.

“As an editor, I feel it is a great privilege to work with footage before anyone else," says Huiras.  "You are the first to see how it can come together, often going with your gut instincts. It’s a very powerful and gratifying feeling.”

Jimmy Helm, The Colonie
During Jimmy Helm’s senior year at Columbia, he secured an internship from The Colonie and was
then hired.

Helm says, "I found that editing is a lot like acting, singing and dancing; at times, it requires all three. And, as with any art form, it is important to relax, focus and stay caffeinated. So before each session, I grab two glasses of iced coffee, warm up the AVID and get into rhythm. When my clients arrive, it's showtime."

Patrick Duffy, Cutters Detroit
Patrick Duffy is one of the young up and coming editors in Detroit. He studied
film directing and editing while at Columbia and worked as an assistant editor for the Chicago Cubs.  Now Patrick has become one of the go-to editors for Team Detroit and Ford, editing on location across the country for several of their key campaigns.

"Creative editors work and play to provide multiple options,
" says Duffy. "It's in these moments that the passion of storytelling begins with deciding what works or how to make it work. The decisions delivered are what separate a great edit from a meager one."
