Radio Department Collaboration Leads to Formation of DJ Academy Program

Radio Department Associate Professor, Jim Mitchem, and Adjunct faculty member Lavoy McConnell along with Paul Teruel, Director of Community Partnerships at Columbia College Chicago, have partnered with Young Chicago Authors and the Louder Than a Bomb poetry event to form a DJ Academy Program.

The DJ Academy actively recruits and selects students from The Club DJ I and The Club DJ II courses, to perform at Louder Than a Bomb poetry slam events taking place at Columbia College Chicago.

The DJ Academy holds practice sessions on a weekly basis in order to prepare students to participate in Louder Than a Bomb, where there is live interaction with the host, the poets, and the crowd.

Based on the success of student participation with this event, Radio Department adjunct faculty member Lavoy McConnell feels there will be plenty of collaborations in the future. "We're hoping to be able to place more students in events where the DJ is an essential part of the programming. The vision is to integrate our student DJ's into artistic events and provide real world experience for our students who express interest in the art and profession of being a DJ."
