Alumni Spotlight: Katie Kather

Katie Kather recently completed a six-month internship at WBEZ Chicago Public Radio before getting hired at Minnesota Public Radio.
Kather said that ever since she decided to pursue a career in journalism, she wanted to work in radio and dreamed of being at WBEZ in some capacity.
“I like the culture of public radio,” she said. “I like using sound to enhance stories.”
While at the Chicago station, Kather cultivated her reporting and producing skills while covering a variety of events in the Chicago area for the Arts and Culture desk. When her internship, originally slated for three months, was extended to six, she had the opportunity to produce short segments and non-narrated features.
Before the internship ended, Kather completed her first radio feature - a story about a former prison inmate who is trying to use yoga as a way to help people avoid violence. She was given the opportunity to pitch her story, complete all necessary reporting and produce the final piece for the station.

Kather received a great deal of positive feedback, and was told it was great to see a story about Chicago that wasn’t negative.
She described her experience at WBEZ as rewarding overall, and said she is open to applying for a position there if and when one becomes available.
“The culture there is phenomenal,“ Kather said.
