Cinema Arts & Crafts

CA+S filmmakers collaborated on Arts & Crafts, a web series that follows a student who transfers to art school.

The group first came together during the 2013 J-term spring semester. They shot the pilot episode in April and premiered it on YouTube at the beginning of August. The series is completely student produced and created by current CA+S students and features many talented Columbia College actors.

“It’s a comedic web series developed in hopes of creating an independent project for student collaboration,” says series creator, actress, and director, Ali Hadley (’15). “Our objective is to share this series and grow as artists. What better way than to poke fun of the very environment we chose to be a part of?”

Networking was crucial to the success of the pilot episode.  The group of talented and dedicated students behind and in front of the camera used social media to help the series garner attention. Cast member Sarah Perry (’16), has even been recognized on the street by complete strangers.

“Columbia is always pushing us to go out and create outside of the classroom. When Ali came to me with this idea last spring, I thought, ‘Yeah, this is definitely something we can make happen.’” shares producer Sarah Soderquist (’15).

As for the future of the series, the team plans on shooting the rest of season one during fall 2013 semester with the hopes of a season two being shot in January 2014.

“Art school is surprising, full of energy, and truly home for our cast and crew,” adds Hadley. “There’s a story or two to be told here and we’re ready for whatever comes next.”
