Camp Kuleshov Rocks
Ben Winter (BA’10), a current assistant editor at Red Car, recently won the 2013 AICE Chicago Camp Kuleshov trailer editing Grand Prize with his entry Planet of Rocks.
Camp Kuleshov is an annual competition for industry assistants (editors, engineers and designers) to showcase their talents by creating movie trailers out of existing content. This year’s competition theme was “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon,” in which contestants had to create movie or show trailers out of footage from films starring actor Kevin Bacon. Winter’s entry, Planet of Rocks, is a trailer for a non-existant Discovery Channel series that examines the wonderful world of rocks.
“It’s a whole lot of fun,” said Winter about entering the competition, adding “it’s a great way to show the industry your editing skills, both creative and technical.”
Winter, who did freelance work for a couple of years after graduating from Columbia College, eventually got picked up by Red Car, a national editorial company based in New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Chicago. However, it’s his time in school that he credits for his success. “There’s no way I’d be where I am right now if I didn’t attend Columbia,” says Winter, reminding students to “never stop learning, especially in this industry. Learn before you need to know it for a job, it will make your life easier and it will impress the right people.”
