Cinema Slapdown Round 43: THE HELP
Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 7 pm
Film Row Cinema, 1104 S. Wabash, 8th Floor
A thick wedge of Southern pie? Provost Louise (“a tasty and filling slice!”) Love versus WBEZ South Side Bureau Reporter Natalie Y. (“this pie tastes like what it is!”) Moore.
Is The Help an authentic reflection of the African American female experience in the years just before the Civil Rights movement, or a case of self-righteous white liberalism taking credit for “giving” black people a voice? Is it this generation’s heartfelt journey to the land of To Kill A Mockingbird or just another humiliating trip to the woodshed behind Uncle Tom’s Cabin? Is Mississippi Burning or just Gone with the Wind?
