The Learning Studio: A Lifesaver for Hard Classes

Overwhelmed in class? Have zero to little idea what’s happening or just need help on a hard subject? You don’t have to go it alone. The Learning Studio is a resource for all students who need some academic support. From tutoring to computer lab space to supplemental instruction, they got you covered. We get the scoop on the best way to use this amazing resource on campus.

What does the Learning Studio do?

The Learning Studio has a Writing Center and a Science & Math Learning Center to help students with their coursework in those areas. “For writing, our tutors come from almost every discipline at the college,” says Julie Redmond, Assistant Vice President for Academic Support. “We help film and dance majors with very specific writing within their departments. It’s not just for a freshman writing class.” While writing, science and math are the most popular tutoring subjects, the Learning Studio also offers support in foreign languages, technology and accounting.

Why should you use the Learning Studio?

“There’s no cost associated with [our services], so there’s really no loss to students to give it a shot. Students are in charge of their academic success so they have to take the initiative to come here and use the resources that are available to them,” says Redmond. Seriously, if you’re having trouble, you have nothing to lose.

When can I go in?

Tutoring hours are available every single day. To be more accessible to students, there are weekend and after-hour tutoring sessions, too.

  • On weekends, tutoring is available Saturday 10:00 am-3:00 pm and Sunday 10:00 am-5:00 pm in the Library, 3rd floor.
  • After-hours tutoring takes place in the residence centers Monday-Wednesday from 7-10:00 pm.

Keep in mind that the busiest times in the Learning Studio are during midterms and finals. With one third of the student population filing through the Learning Studio, that’s super busy!

How can I make an appointment?

The best way is to log into Oasis and go to the ‘My Appointments’ tab and make an appointment there. You can also call them at 312.369.8130. But, if you’re in crunch time and need help for something due the next day, it’s usually not a problem. “We have tutors that are assigned to receive walk-ins, but it’s first come, first served. We can’t guarantee that someone is going to be available and we always suggest that students plan in advance,” says Redmond.
