The Board of Trustees approved Dr. Kwang-Wu Kim as president-elect of Columbia College Chicago.



Hair Trigger 34 and Fictionary Win Columbia (University) Scholastic Press Association Awards
We are proud to announce that Hair Trigger 34 won a Silver Crown and Fictionary received a Gold Crown in March 2013 at the annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association convention in New York City, making these recent awards the twentieth Gold or Silver Crown for Hair Trigger since the Fiction Writing Department first entered Hair Trigger into the annual CSPA competitions in 1989, and the first Gold Crown for Fictionary.

2013 Alumni of the Year Recipients Announced
As an annual tradition, Columbia College Chicago will honor Alumni of the Year during spring commencement ceremonies on May 18-19. These three alumni, whose work and dedication to their craft is a tribute to the Columbia College spirit and ideal, are true success stories and have helped to author the cultural fabric around them.

The 2013 spring Alumni on 5 Exhibition: Teaching Artists looks at Columbia alumni teaching artists (artists who teach) and the connection between the artist’s studio practice and their teaching practice. This year’s exhibition focuses on the correlation between the artwork our alumni create, their teaching practice, and the work their students create.

Audio Arts + Acoustics Live Sound Alumni Receive National Recognition
AA+A Live Sound Alumni receive National recognition for their Live & Installed Sound skills at the 12th Annual Parnelli Awards gala held Oct. 20, 2012 at the Mirage Las Vegas. The award recognizes pioneering, influential professionals and their contributions, honoring both individuals and companies, and is considered the "Oscar®" of the Live Event Industry.


FREE Arts Management Workshops through AEMM
The Arts, Entertainment and Media Management Department (AEMM) has renewed its partnership with the Arts & Business Council of Chicago to develop and offer a series of FREE arts management workshops on campus! The workshops will be open to professionals, faculty, students, and alumni.

McNair Wins CWA Book of Year Award
The Fiction Writing Department of Columbia College Chicago is delighted to announce that Associate Professor Patricia Ann McNair’s short story collection, The Temple of Air, has won another prestigious award. The Chicago Writers Association has honored it with the Second Annual Book of the Year Award for traditionally published fiction, where it was one of three finalists.

Professor Emeritus Bernard M. Wideroe Passes Away
Professor Emeritus Bernard M. "Bernie" Wideroe passed away Wednesday, October 24, after suffering a heart attack. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.

Nino Rodriguez Creates Mural for Columbia College Chicago
Columbia College Chicago alumnus Nino Rodriguez (BA '05) designed and painted a Chicago-themed mural for the Wabash Arts Corridor project.

Columbia Makes The Hollywood Reporter's List of Top 25 Film Schools
In the August 3 issue, preeminent film industry publication The Hollywood Reporter honored Columbia College Chicago as one of the top 25 film schools. Aided by industry insiders, The Hollywood Reporter evaluated the world’s most prestigious film programs for the 2012 list.

Chapman and Gotsch Join Columbia
Warren K. Chapman, previously the University of Illinois Chicago Vice Chancellor and a Columbia College trustee, joined Columbia College Chicago in June in an interim role as senior vice president for a two-year term. Kenneth C. Gotsch also joined the college in May as the new Vice President for Business Affairs and Chief Financial Officer.

Alumnus Ira Brooker Looking for Subjects for New Book "How I Use My Useless Degree"
Columbia MFA Ira Brooker is working on a book tentatively titled How I Use My Useless Degree. He is looking for interviewees who earned liberal arts or fine arts degrees in the past five or six years and are currently employed in a job that puts that training to work.

Local Artists, Faculty, and Alumni Perform at The Dance Center
Chicago dance artists The Space/Movement Project, Rachel Damon/Synapse Arts, and Erica Mott join together for Receiver a shared program exploring the varying degrees of theatricality in contemporary dance. They will perform at The Dance Center on Thursday, March 8, through Saturday, March 10, at 8 p.m.

The 6th Annual DMTC Alumni Dance Concert will be held on March 2, 2012, at Ruth Page Center.

THE BETTY GARRETT MUSICAL THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP -- CABARET FUNDRAISER
On Saturday, February 4, 2012, Columbia College Chicago will present An Evening of Cabaret: Journeys and New Beginnings, featuring veteran and emerging Chicago-area cabaret artists, including alumni, students, and faculty of the Columbia College Chicago Musical Theatre Program. The performance will be co-hosted by Allen Turner, Chairman of the Board of Columbia College Chicago, and acclaimed Chicago cabaret artist Beckie Menzie. Other performers include faculty members Paul Amandes, Ashton Byrum, Sharon Carlson, Stephanie Shaw (also and alumna), Andra Velis Simon, and alumni Alex Newkirk and Kate Schwarz. Presented by the Columbia College Theatre Department's Musical Theatre Program in association with the College's Office of Institutional Advancement, the evening will raise funds for the Betty Garrett Musical Theatre Scholarship.

New Grants Expand Columbia’s After School Programs in CPS
Columbia College Chicago is extending its impact in the community through its Center for Community Arts Partnerships (CCAP). CCAP was recently awarded two grants to expand its Community Schools Initiative, which works on-site at Chicago Public Schools to holistically support K-12 students through after school programs, parent engagement, and other needed services.

2012 Written Image Screenwriting Competition
Written Image is now accepting submissions. Entries must be postmarked by December 30th, 2011.

The Written Image Screenwriting Prize is designed to foster the development and recognition of "new screenwriters," specifically alumni of Columbia College Chicago, who majored in Film, or current students with a declared major in Film & Video - writers who are at the threshold of a professional career.

A celebration of the life of Rose Marie Economou, Associate Professor of Journalism and Emmy-Award winning television producer, will be held at Columbia College Chicago on Thursday, November 17.

Silent Auction Items Needed!
The Gianna Esposito Halloween Faire is a family benefit to raise funds for Columbia College Chicago students for their college education on October 28. Gianna was a Columbia photography student who died tragically a few weeks after starting at Columbia.  During her time at the College, she had come to know it as a place where she could be comfortable and explore her art.  To honor her memory, and help other students at Columbia, her family started a scholarship fund in her name.

Audio Arts & Acoustics to Host Ntl Hghwy Institute’s Traffic Noise Seminar
On August 25, 2011, thirty people will  graduate from the National Highway Institute’s Highway Traffic Noise Seminar  being hosted by Columbia College Chicago’s Audio Arts + Acoustics Department. Will you be one of them?

David Cromer directs House of Blue Leaves on Broadway
David Cromer ('86, 2011 Alumnus of the Year) directs Ben Stiller, Edie Falco and Jennifer Jason Leigh in the Broadway revival of John Guare’s comedic masterpiece THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES. THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES, a strictly limited 16‐week engagement, opens on Monday, April 25, 2011 at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street).

Columbia College Purchases Iconic South Michigan Building
Columbia College has purchased the Johnson Publishing building at 820 South Michigan Ave., the home to Ebony and Jet magazines.
