The Fiction Writing Department of Columbia College Chicago is proud to announce that, in addition to winning a Gold Medal Certificate and a number of Gold Circle Awards for individual student stories and creative nonfiction essays in fall 2010, both Hair Trigger 32 and Fictionary received Silver Crowns on March 12 and 13 at the annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association convention in New York City, making these recent awards the eighteenth Gold or Silver Crown for Hair Trigger since the Fiction Writing Department first entered Hair Trigger into the annual CSPA competitions in 1989 and the first Silver Crown for Fictionary. The CSPA judges entries on writing, editing, design, content, concept, photography, art, and graphics. Over the years, the CSPA has awarded 156 individual awards for Hair Trigger and individual student writers in the Fiction Writing Department. A total of 1558 magazines, newspapers, yearbooks, and digital media sites were eligible to enter in their respective categories this year.
Congratulations to Shawn Shiflett and Chris Maul Rice, faculty advisors to Hair Trigger, as well as to the student editors of Hair Trigger 32 and the students whose excellent stories and essays went into creating such a fine edition. Once again, these talented students have, in their diverse voices and commitment to excellence, exhibited the power of Columbia’s unique mission.
